If this game recap is a little off, forgive me, but I'm about 8 beers in already. However, regardless of how bias I am, this is a prime example of how Dr. Paul Johnson's offense can survive, especially with the excellence of a great defense. The offense, in all its wisdom gave up the ball three times, twice almost in the red zone. Yet, each time the defense held the BC offense to field goals. The lone TD came from basically a jump ball, and, unfortunately, the glory of a tie goes to the receiver.
The offense didn't explode, as you would expect against a decent defense. However, GaTech was able to manage a 75-yard drive in the first quarter of the game to set the tone. That TD, along with several defensive stands, showed that GaTech would not go down easily.
Luckily the Defense stood solid on every possession giving up minimal points even when pushed into a hard spot. Twice the defense was forced to hold the BC offense right after getting off the field, and both times they forced a field goal, rather than an easy red zone TD.
While PJ might have brought an offense that is always capable of scoring, it appears the Defense - PJ system notwithstanding - will be the life blood of this football team. Finally PJ's offense got put to a test in the ACC, and came out relatively unscathed. It might not have racked up 350+ total yards on the offense, but it did enough to get the W, against a very good defensive front. Thank God for J Dwyer and his brilliant 43-yard run for the winning staple.
Regardless, thank God for Newcastle, my beer of choice, as otherwise this game would have been even worse to watch. Luckily the Keg was flowing, and the game looked a lot better than I'm sure it will on paper. Next week and Va Tech - the offense will have to function much better, and without the fumbles in order to pose a threat to the VaTech defense. For now, regardless of how well we might be on the ground, we'll have to rely on the defensive front to keep the game in our corner.
