  1. A bit shocked to see Ohio State fall so far, but I guess they are a team we just love to hate. I'd be pretty shocked if they couldn't beat a team like Oregon though. I think USC is just that good.

  2. I agree. I think that all Saturday showed was that the polls were right, OSU played like the number 5-10 ranked team in the nation when faced with the number 1 team in the nation.

  3. I think that with Beanie, they're easily a top 10 team. But without him, which they are today, they are around a top 20 team. I think a No. 10 team shouldn't be manhandled and beaten by 5 TD's, even by the No. 1 team.

The killer is the fact they'll probably run through the Big Ten (and Wisconsin and Penn St will make the conference look decent) and people will forget how bad this loss really was.

  4. I think Beanie is getting too much credit for how bad OSU is. I think they are barely a top 15 team. They played USC like they were only a step above UVA, and I dont see them walking through their conference. I think Penn St, and even Wisconsin are much better football teams than OSU, especially without Beanie, and if they continue not to play Pryor. They might be talented, but they stay in the top 25 till they play Wisconsin

  5. I'm not making any excuses for Ohio State. John would know this best because he has experienced my distain for them in person. In fact, I actually enjoyed watching Florida and LSU kick the s*hit out of them. All you have to do is spend a little time with their fans to understand where I'm coming from. Phew....ok

That said, there is no denying that USC is a freakin NFL team playing in the PAC 10. It's scary the kind of recruits they rake in EVERY year. If they don't go undefeated this year I will be shocked.

  6. I half agree with being shocked if they lose, but they have a knack for losing to crappy ass teams every year... Take STANFORD, at HOME. Or maybe we should using Oregon State the year before that...

That said I hope they go undefeated, and an SEC team manages to make it to the National Championship. I want this Pac10 is better than the SEC thing settled once and for all

  7. John, you really think Auburn or Texas Tech would go into CA and give any better showing against the Trojans than Ohio St. did last Saturday? I just don't see it. Right now, UGA and Oklahoma are the only teams that I think could keep it even remotely close (14 points). In fact, I would pay money to watch Tim Tebow have to play USC right now. A lot of money.

  8. Greg,
That's a little bit ridiculous. USC looks great, but they're not the Miami Dolphins. (oh, wait... maybe they are...)

Seriously, my point is that no one gave Texas a chance against the greatest USC team of all-time in 2005; and to an extent, no one gave Florida a chance against "the-best-team-in-the-country" Ohio State team in 2006. Just because USC blew away Ohio State (which was incapable of putting together a running game to create a balanced attack and threaten USC) doesn't make them head-and-shoulders better than Florida or Missouri or LSU or Wisconsin or Texas or, yes, Texas Tech.

A balanced OSU team would've threatened the Trojans, at least through 3 quarters, but they would've lost. Let's not forget that USC had two weeks (and to an extent 8 months) to prepare for the Buckeyes, and before everyone hands them plane fare to the NC Game, remember that the Trojans have only gone unbeaten once under Carroll and are notorious for dropping a game to a lesser opponent. (KSt in '02, Cal in '03, Oregon State&UCLA in '06, Stanford in '07).

  9. Your history is fine, John. But it's just that. History. All I'm saying is that right now, I don't think it is too crazy to say that if you substituted any of the 4-10 teams for OSU last Saturday night the outcome would have largely been the same.

As to your history lesson, Texas was a far better team in 2005 than any of the 4-10 teams. In 2006, you're talking about Ohio State . . . who everyone knows is constantly overrated. I'm not sure it's really fair to point to a National Championship game that resulted in an upset and say it strengthens your claim. If you were going to, Ohio State over Miami probably would have been a better selection anyway.

I definitely cannot make a determination on how this USC team stacks up to prior years. But, I believe that overall, the Top 10 this year is fairly weak . . . as evidenced by Auburn's stunning 3-2 victory over tough tough Miss. St. (as well as the early falls of Clemson, WVU, and VaTech). Florida is riding Tebow infatuation and looks vulnerable. I still don't buy the idea that a team like Mizzou can even play on the same field as USC.

  10. Greg,
They can all play on the same field as USC. My little bro's pee wee team can play on the same field as USC. All you have to do is put 11 people out there... not too difficult.

P.S. I do not have a brother, so I cannot speak to the truth of any of the above.
