Week 4
LSU remains on top, OU retakes No. 3

With their close win over Ole Miss, the Florida Gators slipped to fourth in this week's Southern College Football poll. Their 30-24 victory in Oxford, Miss., however, wasn't enough for one pollster to lower the Gators, as UF picked up one first place vote.
LSU kept their No. 1 spot intact this week after winning 28-16 over former No. 14 South Carolina; USC remained at No.2, and Oklahoma moved to No. 3 with a win Friday night over Tulsa. West Virginia remained at No. 5, followed by Cal, Texas, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Boston College.
Penn State fell for the eighth straight time to Michigan, as the Wolverines are rebounding from a poor opening two weeks to knock the Nittany Lions from No. 10 to out of the polls.
Oregon moved up one spot to No. 11, followed by Clemson, Rutgers and Kentucky. Georgia, 26-23 victors over Alabama in overtime, returned to the polls at No. 15, edging South Carolina, who beat the Bulldogs two weeks ago in Athens, Ga.
South Florida, currently one spot out of the poll, takes on Big East rival West Virginia on Friday. The Bulls, which beat WVU last season, try to extend a good start to the season, which includes a victory at Auburn.
The SEC has the most teams in this weeks poll (5), followed by the Pac-10 (3); the Big XII, Big East, Big 10 and ACC all had two teams apiece.

LSU, USC remain Tops in SCF Poll

LSU narrowly held it's lead over Southern California in the recent Southern College Football Poll. The Tigers took nine of the 15 first place votes. Though there was fluctuation, no teams fell from the top 10 from last week's poll. USC garnered three more votes than last week after rolling over Nebraska 49-31 in Lincoln, Neb.
Florida moved up to No. 3 following a 59-20 win over SEC East rival Tennessee. Oklahoma and West Virginia round out the top five. California, Wisconsin, Texas, Penn State and Ohio State complete the top 10.
Boston College, riding a 24-10 victory over Georgia Tech in Atlanta, jumped into the poll at No. 11, followed by Oregon, which moved up three spots from last week. South Carolina, ranked No. 13 in the poll, travels to Baton Rouge to play top-ranked LSU on Saturday. Clemson, Rutgers and Alabama close out the top 16.
Alabama, victors over Arkansas on a last-minute touchdown, received no points in last weeks poll, but mark the fourth Southeastern Conference team in this week's top 16. Georgia, which plays at Tuscaloosa on Saturday, received 4 points.

Beginning of the End of Polls as We Know Them
Beginning with the second week of the 2007 football season, a group of football fans scattered around the Southeast decided that not only were they more aware of the college football world, they could create a better, more accurate college football poll.
Limiting the poll to just 16 teams, the group, ranging from bankers, professionals, doctors and students, is dedicated to creating a college football poll that is reflective of the current landscape. Limiting the poll to 16 teams will allow pollsters to focus on only the top teams in the country, make inclusion in the poll rewarding, while also being a hark to college football fans' push to a playoff (whether it be a 4, 8 or 16 team playoff).
Though not a true representation of the entire nation, the voters do represent the country's most-die hard college football region, and this devotion will produce more accurate rankings than either reporters or coaches can. Beginning Sept. 13, 2007, the initial Southern College Football Poll will be published to this website; the poll will be published every Monday throughout the season.
