Ole Miss Is National Team of the Week

For Immediate Release

The Ole Miss Rebels have been named the Southern Fans' National Team of the Week following their victory over previously-ranked No. 4 Florida. The Rebels, down 17--7 at halftime, rallied behind quarterback Jevan Snead, a former Gator commitment, to give Houston Nutt his first signature win in only his fifth game in Oxford.

After taking a fourth quarter 31-24 lead, Florida scored a touchdown, but the Rebels blocked the extra point. Florida had the ball late in the fourth quarter needing only a field goal to win, but on fourth-and-one Tim Tebow was stopped for no gain. The Gators, who turned the ball over 3 times, lost only the second time in The Swamp under Urban Meyer. The Rebels are 3-1 in their past four meetings against Florida.

Other nominees for this week's Southern Fans' National Team of the Week:

Alabama (5-0)
W - at No. 2 Georgia 41-17
The Crimson Tide walked into a Georgia blackout on Saturday, but had no problem finding their way to an upset thrashing of the preseason No. 1 Bulldogs. Nick Saban's bunch jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead before a late UGA surge to make the score more presentable. The Tide used the win to jump to No. 2 in the Southern Fans' Poll.

Duke (3-1)
W - Virginia 31-3
Duke made Virginia the bottom feeder of the ACC, as the Blue Devils forced six turnovers to end their 25-game ACC losing streak. Duke had not beaten an ACC team since November 2004 (against Clemson). The 28-point win was Duke's largest since beating Northwestern 44-10 in 1998, and the largest against an ACC opponent since 1994, the last season Duke went to a bowl game.

Michigan (2-2)
W - No. 8 Wisconsin 27-25
Michigan and Rich Rodriguez did something that no other Wolverine team has done in Michigan Stadium. After allowing the highly ranked Badgers to jump to a 19-0 halftime lead, the Wolverines responded by scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter and stopping a two-point conversion on Wisconsin's final touchdown, to make the greatest comeback in Michigan Stadium history.

Oregon State (2-2)
W - No. 1 USC 27-21
The last time the Trojans came to Corvalis in 2006, the Badgers knocked off USC in what was thought to be a fluke loss. In 2008, USC's return trip turned out the same, but this time, no one thought it was a fluke. Jumping out to a 21-0 lead, the Beavers held on as USC mounted a third quarter siege, and recovered the onside kick to win 27-21.

The Southern Fans' Poll began naming a national team of the week this season. Members of the Southern Fan's pool of voters decide the weekly honor. Each Monday during the 2008 college football season, the Southern Fans will name the National Team of the Week through Dec. 1.
