Jackets Get Big Win in Chapel Hill

After 2 possessions by each team in the first QUARTER: 14-10, Georgia Tech. The Jackets, known for drives that eat time off the clock had possessed the ball for a mere, 3:44. However, the first half was full of who is going to score, because neither team was playing defense. The Tar Heels marched up and down the field at will in the first half, and the Jacket met little resistance either. First half score, 17-17. No Punts. No Turnovers. 1 Penalty. At least 50 missed tackles.

The second half started with Tech’s first turnover. Not a bad pitch by Nesbitt, but Roddy Jones had slipped in his motion and was not where he was supposed to be for the pitch relationship. Yates and Co. capitalized shoving the ball in Al Groh’s defense with ease. 3 plays, TD UNC. The next three possessions finally featured the first defense of the day, and UNC’s first turnover. Nesbitt then made the play of the game. 3rd and 11, Nesbitt scrambles up into the pocket, and finds Jones running a crossing route, who breaks across the first down marker, and gains another 30. That play led to a nesbitt rushing TD, and tying the game at 24 all. Georgia Tech would go on to kick two FGs, and the defense would hold UNCs scoreless the rest of the way.

All in all, a win. A good win. 1-0 in the conference, and one game into defending the title. But, the defense is struggling in the new 3-4. Groh’s crew barely gets any pressure on the QB, barely gets and push on the D-line, and has a rough time tackling. I think the offense has what it takes to repeat. UNC didn’t stop the option all day, giving up 372 on the ground and 2 100 yard rushers. But the defense has to improve if the Jackets stand any chance in the days to come.
