Vandy Football Still Terrible
by Greg Frayser
Larry Smith is not the answer. This "zone read" play they love to call with him is awful. It's predictable, and he can't run it well. Our strategy seems to be: run that play over and over again for the first three quarters, getting stuffed more often than not, until the defense decides to dare us to throw and then hope that one of those cement block passes Smith throws actually finds a Vandy player for a big gain.
We have two, if not three, good running backs this year, but Smith is not going to be able to get it done even with that. He's that bad. I don't get it. He was supposed to be a good pickup from VaTech.
Has anyone heard coach Robbie Caldwell speak? Sometimes I feel as though he's about to fall asleep mid-sentence. But supposedly he was the talk of the town at some SEC gathering recently. Both the press and other coaches seemed to love him. I just don't see a guy that's going to motivate a perpetual underdog.
We'll be lucky to win two games at this point.
