Trojans Seize No. 1 During Off Week

For Immediate Release

Ohio State travels to Los Angeles this Saturday to face Southern Cal, but the Buckeyes already helped lift the Trojans to No. 1 in the Southern Fans' College Football Poll. Ohio State played so poorly on Saturday against the Ohio Bobcats that the Buckeyes lost all respect and - more importantly - five first place votes. Those votes appear to have helped boost USC to No. 1, as the Trojans topped 12 ballets, up four from last week.

Georgia, last week's number 1 team, fell to number two. The Bulldogs, 56-17 victors over defending MAC Champion Central Michigan, fell two points shy of the first place spot. UGA also received 12 first place votes. Ohio State, number 3 in last week's poll, dropped four spots, following the dismal performance against the Bobcats. OSU trailed going into the final quarter, but rallied without star RB Chris 'Beanie' Wells.

Oklahoma moved up one spot to number three, followed by Florida and LSU. The Gators received five first place votes, one more than last week. LSU barely edged Missouri for the fifth place ranking, as the Bengal Tigers postponed its game against Troy until mid-November. Texas moved up two spots to number eight, followed by Auburn and Wisconsin.

Texas Tech, Arizona State and Kansas hold the next three slots, followed by East Carolina, the first Conference USA team to ever be ranked in the Southern Fans' Poll. ECU defeated No. 8 West Virginia 24-3 on Saturday, which followed the Pirates 27-22 victory over then-No. 15 Virgina Tech on opening weekend.

Alabama remained at No. 15 following the Crimson Tide victory over Tulane. Penn State entered the poll for the first time this year. West Virginia and Oregon both fell from the poll.
