Iowa Is National Team of the Week

For Immediate Release

With their 24-23 win over third-ranked Penn State, the Iowa Hawkeyes (6-4) have been named the Southern Fans' National Team of the Week for games of the weekend of Nov. 8.

Reserve placekicker Daniel Murray capped a 10-point fourth-quarter rally with a 31-yard field with one second left to give Iowa the upset win.

Shonn Green ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns and the Iowa defense held Penn State's Daryll Clark to 86 yards passing and forced him to throw just his third interception of the year.

Other nominees for this week's Southern Fans' National Team of the Week:

No. 1 Alabama (7-1)
W - at No. 15 LSU 27-21
Behind Julio Jones's 126 receiving yards and Glen Coffee's 126 yards rushing, Alabama snapped a five-game losing streak to LSU while extending their record to 25-8-2 all-time in Tiger Stadium and clinching the SEC West title for the first time since 1999.

Boston College (6-3)
W - vs. Notre Dame 17-0
Montel Harris carried 23 times for 120 yards for the Eagles, who posted their third shutout of the season and their first ever over Notre Dame.

No. 2 Texas Tech (10-0)
W - vs. No. 8 Oklahoma State 30-23
Graham Harrell threw for 456 yards and six touchdowns as the Red Raiders routed Oklahoma State, 56-20, to keep their perfect record in tact.

UAB (2-7)
Did Not Play
After giving up 70 points a week earlier to a Southern Miss team that had yet to beat a D-1A opponent all season, UAB did not lose this week... of course the Blazers did not play. There is no truth to the rumors that Oak Mountain Middle School rung up 55 on UAB during a scrimmage. It was actually the high school's JV squad.

The Southern Fans' Poll began naming a national team of the week this season. Members of the Southern Fan's pool of voters decide the weekly honor. Each Monday during the 2008 college football season, the Southern Fans will name the National Team of the Week through Dec. 1.

  1. I agree... what a worthless state.

Eddie, just for you I've decided to boycott Iowa. Next time someone asks me to go to Minnesota, I'll say sure, but only if we can go around that damn Hawkeye state.
