OSU retains No. 1, B.C. slides up to second

For Immediate Release

Ohio State solidified its No. 1 ranking with a 37-17 wipe-out at Penn State. The unbeaten Buckeyes (9-0) received 15 of 17 first place votes, with the remainder splitting between LSU (7-1) and Arizona State (8-0). Boston College, also undefeated, moved up to No. 2 after a late comeback against Virginia Tech. The Hokies led 10-0 with two minutes remaining before Heisman contender Matt Ryan orchestrated two touchdown drives, one following an on-side kick, to lead the Eagles to a 14-10 victory in Blacksburg. The win pushed B.C. ahead of LSU, which did not play this week.

Arizona State moved up two spots to No. 4 following a 31-20 win over California. The Bears, ranked No. 2 just three weeks ago, have dropped three straight games, and did not receive a point in this weeks poll. The Sun Devils play Oregon on Saturday for the Pac-10 lead. The Ducks (8-1) defeated USC 24-17, but slipped one spot to No. 6. Oklahoma (7-1) fell one spot to No. 5 after a bye.

Big 12 North leader Kansas (8-0) vaulted up four spots to No. 7, followed by West Virginia (7-1) and Missouri (7-1). Georgia (6-2) is back in the poll at No. 10 after defeating arch-rival Florida 42-30. The Bulldogs are the highest ranked two-loss team. Michigan, currently on a seven game win streak after beginning the season with two losses, entered the poll for the first time this season at No. 11.

Virginia Tech (6-2) and undefeated Hawaii (8-0) share the No. 12 spot. Auburn (6-3) moved up two spots to No. 14 following a 17-3 victory over Ole Miss. The Tigers are the only three loss team ranked in the SCF poll. Texas (7-2) returns to the rankings following a 28-25 win over Nebraska. Big East leader Connecticut enters the poll for the first at No. 16.

Ohio State holds top spot, LSU up to No. 2

For Immediate Release

In a season full of upsets, last weekend was no different, as No. 2 South Florida fell to Rutgers 30-27 in Picscataway, N.J. on Thursday and LSU rebounded from its first loss by narrowly beating Auburn 30-24. The result is five different teams receiving first place votes, including Ohio State (13), LSU (2), Boston College (1), Oklahoma (1) and Arizona State (1).

Ohio State retained the top spot in the Southern College Football poll following a narrow 24-17 victory over Michigan State. LSU, which defeated Auburn on a last-second touchdown pass, jumped over unbeaten Boston College to claim No. 2. B.C. on a bye last week, remained at No. 3, followed by Oklahoma and Oregon, up four spots from No. 9 last week.

Unbeaten Arizona State moved up one spot to No. 6. West Virginia capitalized on a 38-13 win over Mississippi State to climb three spots in the rankings, followed by Virginia Tech, which hosts No. 3 Boston College on Thursday night. Florida and Southern California round out the top 10. On Saturday, the Trojans will travel to Eugene in a Pac-10 showdown with No. 5 Oregon.

Kansas, the fourth of five unbeaten team, defeated Colorado in Boulder and moved up four spots to No. 11 and one spot ahead of Missouri, 41-10 victors over Texas Tech. South Florida dropped 11 spots to No. 13, while Kentucky fell six spots to No. 14 after losing at home to Florida 45-37. Hawaii moved back into the rankings at No. 15 following a bye. Auburn becomes the first team to lose and move up in the rankings, as their last second loss to LSU had voters give the Tigers the nod over South Carolina, which fell 11 spots following its upset loss to Vanderbilt.

Ohio State takes over top spot

For Immediate Release

An unusual college football season took another turn on Saturday, as the top two ranked teams in the Southern College Football poll lost. LSU, the only team to be ranked No. 1 in the newly created poll, lost to Kentucky 43-37 in three overtimes. California, which was poised to move up to No. 1, had students chanting, "We're No. 1, we're No. 1," after the LSU scored was announced; however, the Bears couldn't get past Oregon State, falling 31-28 to the Beavers.

Ohio State, which began the season at No. 10, moved up to No. 1 after receiving 13 out of 17 first place votes. South Florida, a school that didn't have a football team 12 years ago, moved to No. 2 in the rankings. The Bulls received three first place votes. Boston College gained one spot to No. 3, and Oklahoma, recipient of one first place vote, moved to No. 4. LSU fell to No. 5.

South Carolina, which leads the SEC East race, moved up to No. 6. Arizona State jumped six spots to No. 7, followed by Kentucky, Oregon and West Virginia. California's loss dropped the Bears nine spots to No. 11; Virginia Tech remained at No. 12.

Southern Cal, which was ranked second for the first four weeks of the poll, fell another five spots after its close win against Arizona. Florida remained at No. 14, while unbeaten Kansas moved into the poll for the first time at No. 15. Missouri, losers 41-31 at Oklahoma, dropped six spots to No. 16.

Upsets shake up SCF Poll

For Immediate Release

In what was suppose to be a calm weekend before Oct. 5's "Showdown Saturday" ended with seven ranked Southern College Football Poll teams going down. Oklahoma, Florida, West Virginia and Texas, all ranked in the top 10, each took their first loss of the season.

Oklahoma and Texas were expected to bring unblemished records into Saturday's Red River Shootout, but no one advised Colorado or Kansas State. The Sooners squandered a 14-point fourth quarter lead as the Buffaloes, which finished 2-10 last season, improved to 3-2 going into this weekend's game with Baylor. Kansas State gave Texas it's worst Big 12 home loss since 1994 (34-10 loss to Texas A&M).

Florida, after trailing at halftime to Auburn 14-0, saw it's comeback fall just short when the Tiger's kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired. South Florida, who beat Auburn in week 2, went from unranked to No. 6 as the Bulls defeated West Virginia for the second straight year. The Mountaineers dropped nine spots to No. 14.

LSU and USC remained at the top of the poll, followed by Cal, Ohio State and Wisconsin. South Florida, Boston College, Kentucky, Florida and Oklahoma round out the top 10.

Georgia, at No. 11, remained one spot ahead of South Carolina though the Gamecocks defeated the Bulldogs in Athens on Sept. 8. Oregon, which lost to Cal 31-24 on Saturday, dropped two spots to No. 13, followed by West Virginia. Newcomers Hawai'i and Arizona State complete the top 16.

In addition to the Red River Rivalry, No. 1 LSU hosts No. 9 Florida; No. 4 Ohio State is at undefeated Purdue; No. 8 Kentucky travels to No. 12 South Carolina; and No. 11 Georgia plays at SEC East rival Tennessee.
